But sometimes, it is to hurt somebody and ridicule them of their sexual orientation, even if they aren't even gay in the first place.
Only a few weeks ago on April 6th, an 11-year-old boy named Carl Walker-Hoover was found by his mother hanging by an extension cord in his room, dead. He had apparently committed suicide after dealing with months of teasing from his classmates, who relentlessly attacked him with anti-gay harassment. The 11-year-old did not identify as being gay.
His mother, Sirdeaner L. Walker, said that the New Leadership Charter School did nothing to stop the bullying despite her repeated complaints to the school.
In an interview with the Republican newspaper, Walker said that the 6th grader suffered taunts and threats from other students who made fun of him, insulted the way he dressed and called him gay.
This is at least the fourth suicide of a middle-school aged child linked to bullying, according to the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network.
A boy of 17 named Eric Mohat went home from school on March 27, 2007, put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger.
In a federal lawsuit, the parents of Eric allege that he regularly was called gay, fag, queer and homo among other names and that the school did nothing to prevent it.
"You do not have to identify as gay to be attacked with anti-LGBT language. From their earliest years on the school playground, students learn to use anti-LGBT language as the ultimate weapon to degrade their peers. In many cases, schools and teachers either ignore the behavior or dont know how to intervene." -(GLSEN Executive Director Eliza Byard)
Nearly 9 out of 10 LGBT youth reported being verbally harassed at school in the past year because of their sexual orientation, nearly half reported being physically harassed and about a quarter reported being physically assaulted, according to GLSENs 2007 National School Climate Survey of more than 6,000 LGBT students.
Why? Why does this have to happen? Today, I myself had an experience in class where students were making anti-gay comments, and the teacher not only failed to stop them, but joined in. I was appalled at how the she handled the situation. She didn't stop them from their comments, she actually encouraged them, perhaps unknowingly. I feel that our society is highly uneducated and incredibly disrespectful when it comes to understanding other people.
I feel like we're back in in times when African Americans were considered to be lower class, not deserving equal rights and being enslaved with the justification from certain verses in the Bible. Replace "African Americans" with "Homosexuals" and it's the same exact thing. We may as well be calling someone a jigaboo the next time we shout the word faggot. What's the difference? Does anyone even know how the word "faggot" started? It's from when the KKK would kidnap people who were homosexual (or thought to be) and burn them at the stake, referring to them as the "faggot" which originally meant "a bundle of sticks bound together for burning". Why are we still so hateful? Why are we still so dense?
I am ashamed of our society. Something needs to change.
Devious Comments
We'll always have people that harass, hate and make fun of you because you just don't meet up to their so called "standards," or because of a little flaw they just can't relate to. Which is extremely idiotic.
And I feel you here. Why can't people just accept one another despite our differences?
I also don't know why people think you automatically love every girl in the fucking world if your a lesbian. But honestly, I don't believe in lesbians, gays or straights. I believe that people are attracted to whom ever in spite of sex. You get what I mean? Lol, some people question my belief like, wtf are you talking about. xD
But yeah, people are rude, ignorant, disrespectful, selfish ... and the list goes on. Let's move to Europe. I heard it's not that bad over there. People accept you for who you are and that's the end of that. : D
But I do believe this world can change. We've come so far from the past-- the world is no longer flat and in the center of the universe; slavery is no longer justifiable. Before, everyone was SURE of both those things, but now it has dissolved into common sense that they are not. That is what I hope will one day happen with this matter, as well, and I'm not just going to sit back and let it go, and let somebody else take care of it. Because if we don't stand up for ourselves, who will?

It IS the same kind of discrimination that has happened between the races. But somehow it's more excusable because it is less open. You can't look at someone and know they are gay. It's interesting to me also that homosexuality is often as or more strongly opposed in the black community - at least in America. I'm not sure why that is. Religion? the wish to dissociate with what could potentially be another hardship to overcome?

I climb over the ways we fit together.
What's also interesting is something my friend told me-- she read up on a study they did with seagulls in certain areas, and whenever the seagull population got too big and abundant, they would start to see female seagulls that would become partners with other females, and when birds choose a partner it is a life-long committment. Interesting, considering how abundant the human race is. It is something to think about. It's just another reason to prove that homosexuality may be, in fact, genetic-- and possibly even necessary to our race and the prevention of overpopulation.

No matter what, there will always be something people will use to discriminate against others. religion, race, sexuality, age, size, whatever. people are insecure and shallow, and there will -always- be something they can find to use to hurt you just to make themselves feel superior.
though as far as sexuality goes, I believe all people are inherently bisexual, naturally driven towards pleasure and happiness, and wholly unconcerned with its source, hence sexual "preference." I may prefer men, but I can't deny the beauty of a woman, and I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't consider being with the right woman. Raised in an open society without the blinders of religion-based morality controlling our behavior, we would all be more at ease admitting that of ourselves. I find it interesting that in some other countries, boys and girls will hold hands with their same-sex friends as part of a perfectly natural display of attachment and affection, but in America, its discouraged from as early as preschool, sowing the seeds of shame and disgust towards same-sex affection, even in a non-sexual context. clearly, in our society, being (re)productive, is much more important than finding happiness with someone you love and enjoy being with.
If we just take away the superficial labels of "gay" and "straight", "skinny" and "fat", "black" and "white", we would all come to realize that no matter what is on the outside, we are all the same species and all share the same basic qualities that make us all human. But somehow, people seem miss this fact.

I think that despite what you've said we are slowly moving forward, the newer generations are beginning to explore the ideas of sexuality a lot more than the generations before us, which is often a factor in children's views and how strongly they follow their parents or even grandparents beliefs.
There will always be those opposed to something, either through physical or verbal abuse, and there will be different levels of it, it's not going to stop anyone doing what makes them happy.

And BULLYING, no matter if gays have something to do with it or not, is a horrible thing. I have been bullied since 1st grade, and I still am. No idea why, I guess I'm somehow different then. But I have learnt to don't give a damn to their talks. I'm glad I still have a few friends I spend time with. But I'm really worried about my lil brother, too. Recently I have been realizing that he is being bullied at school - and left all alone. Someday I'm gonna tell those kids they aint any better than the others. People who bully others and think they r something like gods- those really make me angry. WHY are human so selfish and disrespectful?

Your smile keeps me alive~
I'd rather be hated for what I am than loved for what I am not.
